Study On Context Continuation Of The Urban Public Spaces Design

Urban public space is the embodiment of a city's beauty, an important stage of urban life and a significant part of city space. A perfect urban public space is the best tellers of a city's unique history and culture, which grants this space"the eye of a city". Recent years have seen the growth of this space development both in speed and scale owing to the dramatic social and economical improvement and increasing demand for better living environment. Nevertheless, the growth in scale can not promise a better environment and a promoted city image. On the contrary, the construction of the urban public space has brought about increasingly serious problems: the degrading quality of such space; the loss of uniqueness of a city's feature, humanity and the charm this space is supposed to perform, which, from the standpoint of urban design, lies in the lack of the city context, the connection with the city's background culture. Consequently the government has come to attach more stress on these problems; meanwhile, the planners and engineers in this field have shifted the focus from the techniques, function, social and economical aspects to the context embodiment and ecological environment construction. In this case, this thesis intends to propose that the design of urban public space on the basis of context embodiment is of great realistic significance.At present, research on urban city space includes the following trends: research on the systematic construction, developmental tendency and space pattern; study on the vitality and affective characteristics of the public space, etc. Besides, other subjects such as ekistics, architectonics, and landscape architecture have also performed studies on this field from their respective views, however, research on the performance and significance of the city context in urban public space has not gained proper attention. Objectively speaking, the domestic construction and design of urban public space mostly borrows the existing theories and methods aboard and then puts forward some similar ones. On this condition, it is urgent and practical to launch the research on the strategies and methods in designing a context-performing urban public space and put the findings into practice, which would enrich the research of this field.Based upon the studies on urban design, sociology, contextualism, art theory and figure-ground principle, this thesis proposes that the design of urban public space should create a harmonious relationship between men and the environment, and perform the city context so as to enhance the humanistic solicitude of nature and the society and promote a friendly and balanced improvement. The first part will define the urban public space and city context, and then analyze their relations; the second part will put forward the design strategies about how to perform the city context in design, how to create a context-performed urban public space on the basis of context performance and innovation; on the ground of engineering practice, the third part will prove the effect and the principles of the context-emphasized design, thus coming to the conclusion that only by performing and innovating the city context in urban public space design can it help promote the city glamour and enhance the competitiveness of the city.
