Ballast water is a modern ocean-going vessels to ensure safe and efficient maritimeoperations, but untreated ballast water, also to the coastal countries has caused tremendouslosses, which has already recognized as harmful ballast water ocean one of the four majorthreats by the Global Environment Fund. IMO in February2004at the headquarters ofLondon adopted the 《International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’Ballast Water and Sediments》and formulated the ship’s ballast water treatment standards, including the United States, New York standard. In this grim situation, this paper propose aballast water treatment technology roadmap, consist of filter, ultrasound and ultravioletdisinfection. As the first stage filtration process to remove biological solids which sizegreater than50μ m, a density greater than water and; sonication process as a second stage, take the water of bacteria, algae cell membrane, cell wall chipping, and the suspension ofpolymer break up into small particles; ultraviolet sterilization as a tertiary treatment to killremaining microorganisms. This paper bases on theoretical and experimental verification and aim to design anefficient ballast water treatment system available for real ship applications. Researchconducted in this paper is mainly composed of the following parts:1. On the basis of many related literatures, ballast water convention developmentprocess are described. outlined the contents of ballast water convention and the formulationand implementation process. Introduced ballast water norms and ballast water treatmentsystem specification and the status of research developed in some countries.2. UV disinfection sterilization technology as the main Sterilization technology. Usehydrocyclone and ultrasound as a pre-sterilization treatment, which is fit for UV germicidal.Describes the three sterilization of ballast water treatment technology collaborativefeasibility and effectiveness of both theoretical and practical aspects.3. This article completed the treatment capacity300m3/h ballast water treatmentsystem design, get hydrocyclone and UV simulation analysis. Hydrocyclone particletrajectories meet the design requirements, UV radiation dose optimization cavity reaching250.5mJ/cm2.4. Experimental prototype designed in Shanghai Maritime University conducted ashore-based experiments, in strict accordance with IMO standards for testing, experimentaldata obtained show that the system has reached the IMO requirements. The test system is compared with a reference prototype, and the system not only reduces power consumption, and the results are better than the reference system.5. The system compared with other systems which have been get IMO certification. Wecan conclude that the threat of the system should be in the IMO standards, and have betterprospects in real ship.
