The erosion and wear of gun barrels is a complex, interdisciplinary problem which involves a number of interrelated factors. It leads to reduced gun performance and barrel life. During the design and manufacture of weapons, researchers rarely considered from the failure mechanism of barrels, largely depended on the experimental data and empirical methods. The current work in this paper concentrates on the erosion mechanism and the friction and wear of gun barrels. The main points are as follows:1. The chemical, thermal and mechanical effects involved in the gun barrel erosion mechanism were described and analyzed, and the corresponding erosion mitigation methods were proposed.2. Based on phase-change heat transfer theory, the melt-wipe model of barrel erosion mechanism was established, and the computational erosion formula was derived. Using the established model and derived formula, the ablation of a given gun barrel was calculated and analyzed.3. By tribology theory, the melt-wear model of the interaction between projectile and gun barrel was established and the related tribology parameters were derived. With two cannons of different calibers as example, the theoretical calculations and analyses were conducted based on the melt-wear model, and the obtained results were in good agreement with the current tribology theory.4. The computational model of interior ballistics under the condition of bore wear and erosion was established, and the chamber pressure and muzzle velocity of a given eroded gun were calculated. The achievements of this thesis provided a good basis for the further studies of gun barrel erosion and wear.
