Large-scale cooling tower is one of the most important structures in a nuclear power plant. Damages of cooling tower could result in accidents directly or indirectly. A great number of domestic and foreign seismic damages indicate that moderate or strong earthquake could lead to severe destruction in structures. Investigation of seismic effects on cooling tower structure, which aims at ensure the safety and reliability of the structure, has great significance in theory and engineering application. In this article, hyperbolic cooling tower is studied in four aspects:1. Mechanical performance of cooling tower in working conditions of dead weight, wind load and temperature variation was analyzed using FEM software ABAQUS. The three working conditions were also synthesized to figure out the further property of cooling tower.2. Distribution rules of structural displacement, stress and internal force were obtained through seismic analysis of earthquake response spectrum. Time history analysis and mechanical characteristics of structures were attained by the calculation involving El-centro wave, Tangshan wave and artificial seismic wave, and then coMPared with the results from response spectrum.earthquake response of structures was studied under the excitation of bi-directional horizontal.3. Loop and longitudinal reinforcing bars were configured according to domestic and foreign literatures related to reinforcement design in shell elements.4. Parameters of cooling tower including elastic modulus of concrete, pair number of diagonal pillars, thickness of tower barrel, section profile of diagonal pillars, site category and their effects on tower property were analyzed. Referenced suggestions on optimal design of cooling tower were also given.
