As the major damage unit for fragment warhead, fragment is an important form for target damage. Controlled fragmentation aims to improve the large mass fragments’production rate and consistency, it is an important means to enhance the lethality of fragment warhead. In this paper, the casing with laser processing as research object, fracture of grooved cylindrical casing under blast loading was studied. Numerical simulation was used to figure out fragments formation of external grooved casing, then the lethality and fragmentation experimental research of laser processing casing was carried out. The main contents and conclusions as follows:Firstly, the effect of laser weld process parameters on the geometric characteristics and material properties were studied, the relationship between weld depth and laser power or welding speed were obtained. Compared to the base material, the weld material hardness increased and brittleness improved. Secondly, by simplifying, numerical simulation was used to figure out the circumferential fracture of external grooved casing, the effect of groove parameters on the formation of fragments was obtained, fracture trace and fracture probability were deduced, which provides an important reference for parameters selected. Thirdly, AUTODYN-3D was used to simulate the fragmenting of casing for three different patterns. A better fragmentation pattern was obtained through comprehensive comparison of fragment formation, velocity and scattering angle. Then, pattern parameters application on different casing were compared, there is a match relationship between the same pattern parameters and different thickness casing. Through experimental verification, the fragments formation of different pattern parameters was compared, and in good agreement with the simulation results. The factors related to fragmentation lethality ability were tested, and the casing with laser processing was proved increased, warhead casing using laser processing is a good way to achieve controlled fragmentation casing.
