The working principles of LED lamps and traditional incandescent lamps were different essentially. For the retrofit application of LED lamps, the dimmer compatibility became a challenging issue, as dimmer compatibility would cause some problems such as flickering, noise and non-dimmable (or being difficult to dim smoothly).This paper focused on finding solutions for dimmer compatibility. First of all, the LED characteristics were introduced, and then it came to the clarification of dimmer types. A controllable silicon dimmer, which was widely used, was studied, and its working principle, physical characteristics of key components and working wave pattern were also analyzed. After that, we analyzed the abnormal working wave pattern for dimmer working at the distortion state of electric network. Solutions for dimmer compatibility were arranged based on these problems and were categorized into analog solutions and digital solutions. Finally, we conducted the evaluation over the performance, price, driver’s and maturity. All data provides a solid basis for the platform selection of Philips Master bulb.Based on the selected platform, theoretical guidance was proposed by circuit simulation. Tests were carried out over more than 60 popular dimmers in Asia and Europe. Detailed test reports including dimmer characteristics were delivered, together with the involvement of complex multi-lamp applications. The reports could provide a clear guide for end users.In the last two chapters, the current changing application was investigated. Comments and research perspectives were summarized.
