The energy-saving problem is becoming more and more conspicuous in the process of ship design with the price of international crude oil continually increasing. So it is important to study ship lines with low resistance by adopting fast and advanced means, and as the bulb bow and bulb stern have certain potential in reducing the ship resistance, the writer do analysis and research on the bulb bow and bulb stern of several typical types of merchant ships by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, trying to seek the influence of the main parameters of the bulb bow and bulb stern on the resistance characteristic in order to provide necessary reference for the same kind ships to reach a energy-saving design and choose better local lines as quickly as possible.At first, the writer make use of the MANAGER model, one part of NAPA software , the professional ship design software, to realize the data transition between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and CFD. The writer divide the merchant ships into two types: the low speed vessel and middle speed vessel depending on the Froude number. Then using CFD method to carry out numerical calculation on the two types of ship, and compare the result with the model test result, which showing that the calculations and the measurements agree satisfactorily in terms of resistance characteristic. So, the relative accuracy of resistance prediction applying CFD code can be proved. In the end, researches of the main parameters of the bulb bow and bulb stern in the aspect of resistance performance for the influence on the two types ships are done respectively and some suggestions about the bulb bow and bulb stern lines design are given.This paper has a beneficial try for the application of CFD method in ship design and research results indicate that the prediction of merchant ships by CFD code is credible. Especially, it gives important guidance on the design of bulb bow and bulb stern lines and provide necessary basis for energy-saving develop of new ships.
