The paper introduces the pressure wave supercharger(PWS) in a whole and concise way and describes the aerodynamic principle of PWS and explains the energy transfer process taking place in the PWS and hoe aerodynamic phenomena can be utilized to increase the boosting pressure. The main features of PWS, as a new supercharger are also described in the paper. The Comprex PWS is desirable due to following features: DInstant boost response, which results in excellent derivability and low transient smoke emissions. ?High torque at lower speeds, which induces the driver to frequently drive at low engine speed where fuel economy is the best. ()The EGR will occur due to retain of gas in the rotor cells, which reduces the formation of nitrogen oxides and thereby improves the emission characteristics of the engine. We compared the diversified characteristics such as emission characteristics, acceleration characteristics and power characteristics between the PWS diesel and turbo diesel through experiments. On the basis of the good emission characteristics and acceleration characteristics a math calculation of the engine working process has been done. A forecast of the engine characteristics such as maximum power and maximum torque, which may be regarded as the goal, can be made on the basis of the calculation results. In order to make PWS matching the 493 diesel better, some improving changes have been made which were mainly in inlet system and outlet system. At the same time adjustments in oil pump were also been done to increase the oil quantity with the increased inlet air. An experiment of inlet pipe was also been carried out, which proved that the larger inlet pipe is helpful for improving air flowing. In addition, we designed and made a new GP plate in which the OP was the same size of that of PWS. We tried to find the effect to PWS with changing the volume of GP. And at the base of results of a series of experiments including speed characteristics, load characteristics and acceleration characteristics experiments, we found that compared with the turbo diesel the PWS diesel has unexampled emission characteristics and acceleration characteristics as well as better power characteristics and economical characteristics.
