A series of experimentations have been done to analyze the reason in this paper, which longitudinal web fracture appears in the Cr-Mo alloy rail.1In order to have a comprehensive knowledge for the internal properties of the rail, we examine the chemical component, microstructure and properties according to the request for Quotation of the Cr-Mo alloy rail. These examinations include chemical component, macrostructure, microstructure and microhardness, hardness and tensile property.2In order to analyze the reason that longitudinal web fracture appears in the rail, we make other experimentations. These experimentations include temper heat treatment, impact property, macroscopical and microcosmic examinations for the break-surface, microstructure and microhardness, fracture toughness, residual stress. The results indicate: The strip-shaped martensite has no obvious effects on the rail, and it isn the dominative factor that causes the web fracture. The dominative factor is the great residual tensile stress in the rail web along the height. It is the great residual stress that causes the longitudinal web fracture.
