AbstractThe application of line arresters with Zine Oxide elements to HV transmission lines could avoid the faults, induced by lightning stroking. This paper investigated transmission line arresters with series air gap by a set of simulating calculation and testing, A Monte Carlo statistical method was used to determine the distribution of lightning stroking on the towers in the transmission lines. Because on these results, we can analyze the arrester's capability of withstanding a great deal of lightning stroking. In order to evaluate the effect of before and after arrester installation on transmission lines, the ATP (Alternative Transients Program) was applied to obtain the total number of faults caused by lightning strokes and the lightning-withstand levels of transmission lines with different voltage level (110kV towers with tow shielded wires, 110kV towers with one shielded wire and 220kV double-circuit towers). We found that the insulation coordination between the line arrester with series air gap and insulator string, was studied through simulating and testing . Based on the testing results, we showed a good value for the air gap length of the arrester.
