In this paper, on the basis of several discontinuous deformation analysis methods, DDA (discontinuous deformation analysis) method was researched mainly.Firstly, from the early Joint Element Method, Discrete Element Method, Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua and Block Element Method to recent Numerical Manifold Method, all these numerical analysis methods were instructed, and their advantages and disadvantage were pointed out. Then the theoretical origin of the DDA Method was discussed from the aspects of mechanic theory and energy theory. According to the 2-D analysis, the 3-D analysis on the stress, strain and load of DDA was made, and the corresponding formulation was also deducedSecondly, according to the imperfection of current DDA model, some improvements such as modeling the elastic-plastic in DDA blocks, applying the augmented Lagrangian method to DDA method and disposing of the continuous problem in DDA method were made. Corresponding to the theories of improvement, the program of DDA was also developed correspondingly. The correctness of the theory and reliability of the program were shown by the instruction of several numerical examples.Finally, the slope stability analysis of Baise for excavation and normal usage was conducted, and therefore provide evidence for the engineering design.
