Adopting the resonant intake manifold is a simple and effective way by which increases volumetric efficiency in order to improveperformance of truck Diesel engine.The article elaborates the operation principle and application of the resonant intake manifold, and summarizes development on its pressure wave action simulation. Its mathematical model is set up as well. In order to calculate unsteady flow in it for multi-cylinder engine, the method of characteristics and the two step Lax-Wendroff method are integrated to program in Visual Basic. The comparison of the results obtained in calculations and those obtained in experiments shows that the errors of calculation results of volumetric efficiency are less than 2%.Moreover, the effects of the resonant intake manifold various construction parameters on volumetric efficiency are analyzed in this paper, and the best project is provided for the model 4108Q Diesel engine. The results derived from comparison experiments indicate that various performances of the Diesel engine adopting the best project is better than those of the previous intake manifold . Especially at the rating, the volumetric efficiency and power increases by about 5% , exhaust temperature decreases by 50, 4.3g/Kw.h fuel consumption is reduced, O.SRb smoke emission is cut down. The effects are noticeable.The article has offered reliable foundation of theory for designing resonant intake manifold. It is certain how we apply computers to simulate intake process of multi-cylinder engine and realize the comparison quickly between many objects so as to optimize the resonant intake manifold for multi-cylinder engine and reduce the amount of working in experiments.
