Recently, substantive researches have been done on the bearing mechanism and settlement analysis of piles under vertically loads. While bearing capacity is usually the dominating parameter in design, the top settlement of piles, especially those in statically indeterminate structures that are sensitive to settlement, also needs to be controlled.Combined with the scientific research task "Research on Controlling the Bearing Capacity by Virtue of the Top Settlement of Pile Foundation of Maocaojie Bridge" financed by the Communication Department of Hunan Province, a detailed analysis of the load transfer mechanism of vertically loaded piles has been made and a new load transfer model is proposed in this paper. The depth effect of the shaft resistance, the influence of dissimilar soil types, as well as the nonlinear response of the base resistance, are considered in this model, which can comprehensively simulate the actuality of the pile-soil interaction and be applicable to different construction methods. Based on the improved model and respectively considering the top settlement in elastic, elastic-plastic or plastic status, a series of formulas were deduced for how to control the vertical bearing capacity of piles by means of the top settlement values. Corresponding exploited computing procedure, is introduced in this paper as well.Besides, the instrumented pile test of Maocaojie Bridge was accomplished and a set of rewarding results was obtained. At last, a comparison states that, results based on the improved model coincide well with those from the field test.
