Numerical simulation of airbag-unfolding can be a powerful tool in the development of a SIR (Supplemental Inflatable Restraint) system leading to an optimized design and to reduction of development time. To ensure reliability, the computer simulation should be validated by a proper experimental method. The purpose of this paper is to provide such a method.Firstly, this paper introduces some basic theories on computer simulation of airbag-unfolding, and presents two key technologies: finite element model and contact impact model of the airbag system. Through analysis of protection of airbag for occupants, this paper takes three parameters into consideration in the simulation. On the basis of that, this paper presents an experimental method to validate the computer simulation. This experiment mainly considers the axial symmetrical impact of airbag with impact object. In addition, it also considers a pendulum impact of airbag with impact object. The length of the pendulum pole becomes another main design parameter. The devices relevant to this experiment are designed and manufactured independently. Finally, two computer simulation models are validated with this experiment method. The comparison of simulation data and experimental data of the tested parameters denotes that they fit each other well, validating the reliability of the simulation.
