Along with the growth in interconnections, the complexity of power systems is continually increasing. The stability problem becomes more and more serious. With the PMU(Phasor Measurement Units) based on GPS (Globe Position System), the phase angle of power system is measured, so dynamic behavior of the system is monitored and controlled. Some new applications in the monitoring and control system are presented in this paper. The main contents are followed:1. A new method for measuring the position of the rotor and the real-time rotor angle of the synchronous generator using GPS and tachometer is presented in this paper, which can be easily realized in engineering practice with high accuracy.2. Based on OSI and TCP/IP reference model, the principle and technology of data communication network for the power system are introduced .The scheme of constructing data communication network for dynamic monitoring and control system is expounded.3. A transfer system for PMU data is built based on the Ethernet and ATM technology. In the system, the communication delay is reduced by using the Ethernet switch combined the ATM switch .The error rate is reduced also because the program of the communication is programmed with the Winsock and TCP/IP protocol.4. The applications of PMU data in monitoring substation are given. The hardware and the software are designed and implemented.The validity of these methods studying above has been tested by the application in Henan Provincial Power Company, which meet the requirements of the engineering practice.
