Intelligent conceptual design researching always is the focusing topics of Computer Integrated Manufacture System. Conceptual design is the most important, the most complex, the most active, and the most creative design states in the process of products design, which have the nature of explicit creativity, multi-solution, hierarchy, similarity, experience and compositivty, and which is a complex process of decision-making. We know that deeply knowledge representation and reasoning is a challenge research task in conceptual design. The paper is supported by Nature Science Foundation and by 863, the method of Case Extension-Based of conceptual design is thoroughly talked about, which has significant theory and engineer value for solving the bottleneck of intelligent conceptual design.The paper summarizes the method of intelligent conceptual design currently in the world, and combines Extension theory with Case Based Reasoning technology, the paper suggests case based reasoning method that is based on Extension- matter element information, and the idea is identified through a prototype system of speed reducer conceptual design.The paper main contribution is summarized as followed:(1) The paper researches and analyses Extension theory, then suggests three creative points in CBCD: creation of original case, creation of retrieval, creation of revision, and supports conceptual design mapping model of case extension-base reasoning.(2) The paper puts forwards a representation methods of extension-matter-element-information which is suit to case based design knowledge representation, and matter-element-information is regarded as the smallest knowledge cell, describes the feature of matter elements, such as correlative nature, divergent nature, implicative nature, makes knowledge expression have the ability of dynamic.(3) The paper is based on the expression of matter-element-information, then advances inspiration algorithms, and proves the effectivtiy of the algorithms. Matter elements relativity, similarity measure, and the building of case base is considered particularly.(4) Through applying the idea of matter-element-information of extension and corresponding inspiration algorithms that is supported in the paper, the paper develops a prototype system of speed reducer conceptual design of case matter-element-information based reasoning.The main work of paper is based on case based reasoning technology, and combines the special knowledge expression of Extension, then supported inspiration algorithms, the paper pays attention the creativity and the flexibility of design project, and emphasizes the ability of system realization.
