The methodologies of classifying linkage mechanisms of Jehnson's and the regeneration of kinematic chains of Hong-sen Yan's which have representative position are analyzed and discussed in this paper.Both of the two means relate nearly to the theories of type and number syntheses, so researches on the automatic generation of kinematic chains, the detecting of isomorphism and the topological characteristics of common-use basic chains are done. Computer program written in Matlab which can generate kinematic automatically and detect isomorphism with the hamming number technique is used in the generation of chains with eight-link to get non-isomorphic chains directly and satisfactory results have been gotten. Comprehensive analysis and comparison of the topological characteristics like mechanical advantage, compactness, stiffness and dynamic sensitivity of some common-use chains with four-link, six-link, eight-link and one degree of freedom and with five-link, seven-link and two degree of freedom are presented, which can offer reference to the choose of appropriate basic chains in the creative mechanisms design.The final aim of research is application. The methodology of creative mechanisms design is helpful to get some good design projects especially for those who have less experience. The comparison and analysis of the topological characteristics of some common-use basic chains will help the designer to choose better chains according to the need to synthesis in the conceptual stage of creative design in order to assure the forecast and feasibility of project design.
