With the progress of technology and the innovation of maintenance in power plants, Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) is an important and effective way of equipment maintenance. Fault Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a fundamental part of RCM and playing a more and more important role on equipment maintenance. The partition of equipment is an indispensable part of FMEA. The basic ideas and principles of FMEA which are applied to the analysis on the reliability of a steam turbine and its assistant systems are explained in detail. The structure tree of a steam turbine is built and the result of partition is given in this article. The basic principles of "description" and the steps of Function Fault Analysis (FFA) are illustrated in detail. The function logic diagram of a steam turbine is drawn to illustrate the relationship between the function and the reliability. The technical essentials are summarized about the matrix of relationship. The matrix of relationship is completed about turbines to interpret the special relationship between the faults happened and the units of the system to analyze.Every step of FMEA is illustrated from the collection of data, the confirmation of fault mode to the main ideas of fault effect analysis. The turbine and the pump are selected as examples to illustrate the process of reliability analysis. The result of analysis is provided for reference. Moreover, the tendency of future fault analysis about electric power equipment is forecasted. The method named Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is shown. A new method could integrate the virtue of FMEA and FTA. The drop of vacuum about condenser is analyzed as a typical accident to summarize the approaches to the method.
