Since the first multispan cable-stayed bridge was designed and built in 1960s, the structural stiffness has been the block of this type of bridges' popularization. In 1990s bridge engineers of the world once again payed their attention to the sort of bridges and showed preference for how to insure the whole structural stiffness as well as the beautiful appearance.Accordingly, in this essay all kinds of factors that affect mechanical characteristics of multispan cable-stayed bridges were discussed and researched as followed:1. The differences of mechanical behaviors between multispan cable-stayed bridges and the custom two-tower type were given in the comparison.2. Research on the effect which is caused on structural stiffness by structural arrangements was conducted.3. The effect on structural behavior aroused by rigidity distribution among different main components.4. Kinds of structural system were analyzed to find their effects on the structural behaviors.5. The intermediate piers in the side-spans of multispan cable-stayed bridges were analyzed to discuss their stiffening effects on the type of bridge.6. multispan cable-stayed bridges with diverse heights and types of towers were discussed.7.As for multispan cable-stayed bridges with stiffening cables, different arrangement of stiffening cables were given and the variance of temperature among cables, girders and towers were considered as well. Finally, some constructive suggestion on the design and construction of multispan cable-stayed bridges were gained from the study above.
