In recent years, the operational cost increased and pollution caused by ship emission have attracted more attention. Lower consumption of fuel in ships can reduce ship emission pollution. Therefore, lower consumption of fuel in ships is needed.First, this paper introduces and analyzes several kinds of Central Cooling System widely used in ships. According to the means of connection with high or low temperature freshwater, there are two kinds of Central Cooling System: connected with cylinder cooler or connected with mix-valve. It also points out the advantages of the two kinds of Central Cooling System in disposition of heat conversion network and in choice of equipment.Second, according to the basic requirement, common design principle and process of the Central Cooling System, overcoming disadvantages, the heat conversion network optimization is achieved by means of heat conversion network design method. Then, aiming at cost saving, the heat converser and pump are optimized by means of mathematic programming method. In the end, the Central Cooling System is designed based on the above-mentioned methods. Its cost saving conception of the seawater system is also pointed out. And the mathematic model of the Central Cooling System is constructed and it can be simulated. In conclusion, this paper discusses about cost saving from two aspects: one is the optimized design to increase effectiveness of the equipment and reduce demand for seawater, making full use of remainder heat: the other is the optimized control to reduce seawater flux, making full use of the cooling power of seawater if the cooling meets the requirement.
