Virtual reality (VR) is a comprehensive information technology which arose in the end of 20th century. It is the extension of computer simulation at a higher level.VR,by use of computer, generates a simulated environment with which user is able to interact conveniently. The application of VR in automobile design speeds up the steps of design and development, reduces the time and cost of research.VR is currently focused on the virtual prototype, virtual design, virtual assembly and virtual experiment.Based on the scrutiny of the application of virtual reality technology and the analysis of the current status of VR application in automobile design,a car body modeling system is proposed in this thesis. This system utilizes UG's powerful surface modeling, solid modeling, further development and highly interactive tools, nicer virtual environment to realize car body modeling and virtual assemble.Considering actual requirement of car body modeling, further development bases on UG has been done in the paper.a surface smoothing module has been designed to make car body surface smoother, and developed another module to read part's data in UG database and realize data transmitting. This system can effectively support both earlier concept design and detailed design simultaneously.lt is highly interactive and flexible, and satisfies the integration of virtual design and virtual assembly. The paper expatiates a highly interactive and flexible car body modeling method and describes modeling steps in detail.Virtual assembly is studied in this paper. It makes use of static intervening and dynamic intervening examinations in the course of assembly so as to evaluate parts assembly character. Therefore, it vividly simulated the real procedures of parts assembly.ultimately, rendering is done with the car body model generated in the course so as to make it look more realistic.
