Virtual Assembly is a rising aspect of assembly domain and has a brightly application perspective. Its research conduces to the development of Virtual Manufacture. This paper makes a deep research in its system architecture, resolution and key technologies. The research contents of this paper are as follow: First, this paper analyzes the situation that assembly technology doesn't match the step of advanced manufacturing technology's development and points out Virtual Assembly is the best choice of this problem. Then, the necessity of application basis research on Virtual Assembly is proved. Second, when general mechanical product is chosen as the system research object, the architecture and resolution of general-mechanical-product-oriented virtual assembly system(GMPOVAS)are presented. Third, after several methods were compared, the virtual assembly environment develop method of GMPOVAS is established Then, the information content of the assembly model is summarized on the basis of system requirements. An Open United Assembly Model (OUAM) and its expression are proposed. And then, the paper discusses the necessity of introducing the assembly process planning & designing module into the virtual assembly system architecture, builds up the framework of GMPOVAS's process planning &design module, and realizes its function. Finally,A prototype system of GMPOVAS is developed to validate the research work of this paper.
