Based on the requirements of power reading system ' s modernization, a power consumption reading system is designed by using the power lines as the bottom level communication medium, which is using direct sequence spread spectrum communication technology the way ofcommunication. Firstly, one important part of this system---the PowerLine Carrier Meter is completed and the design of the spread spectrum communication unit is introduced. Then the multi-communication concentrator is also designed to have the functions of Modem communication, Power line communication and Ethernet communication. After that, the Management Information System is introduced which uses the Powerbuilder 8.0 development environment. This thesis also introduces the methods of communication over power lines to overcome the communication difficulties by analyzing the principles of the direct sequence spread spectrum communication technology. At last, a better power line communication modem is introduced and the future of the power line communication is discussed.
