Mechanical product design, especially complex product, usually needs cooperative work of the multiple domain expert groups who distribute in different departments and places. Unfortunately, the former computer system may applies different produce data model, or uses different software design packages which may apply different programming language to accomplish, such as c, C++, Java and so on. These packages may install in various operating system and hardware system. Accordingly, with such diversified modeK language and system texture, no matter what cooperation or harmony can be verified very difficult, so we need a integrated system which can support cooperative design in different sites. The Internet/Intranet provides the material base for implementing the distributed cooperative design in multi-locations, Multi-Agent technologies, as basic support tools, are used to implement cooperative design.Firstly, this paper illuminates the relationship between collaborative product design and advanced manufacturing technology, imports the need for Multi-Agent, and introduces the background of appearance and development in Agent technology, presents the basic concept and theory of Agent, summarizes the main research results of Agent. And, it compares Agent-oriented programming (AOP) with object-oriented Programming (OOP) and Multi-Agent (MAS) with traditional system. In the paper we present an agent based intelligent cooperative design architecture MACDA (Multi-Agent Collaborative Design Architecture) with focus on the texture of Agent, the composing of the system, the actualization of task, and discusses the negotiating technique, introduces the concept of metal information and loose coalition, then show a composing of Multi-agent system for pump design and the utility of negotiate strategy. Lastly, this paper summarizes the works, and put forward some opinions about the futurework.
