This thesis firstly describes the history of the development of technology of video image processing and its applications, and then surveys the technology widely used in Intelligent Transportation System, especially focuses on the video detection technology, which is used for traffic information collection. Contrasted with some other ways on traffic information collection, this method has obvious advantages. Based on the specific technology and the understanding of the hardware and algorithm of the image system, the thesis gives a complete video detection system design, which is used for vehicle velocity supervision on the highway management. The thesis designs the basic structure of the hardware platform of the system, and gives the detailing design of algorithm of the system. The algorithm consists of distance calibration and the detection of mobile vehicle by virtual image detector.
