Innovation is the only way to make the products become more competitive. The basic innovation comes from the stage of conceptual design. Expert system is a useful method of innovation by using expert knowledge. In the paper, we use the method of System Engineering to study conceptual design of mechanical transmission system. From the analysis, we can separate mechanical transmission system to many parts, and we can get the answer using design catalogues.With the study of "Three Steps" model for the construction of mechanical transmission conceptual design catalogues, six bits code to scan catalogues is used. In the paper, we also research in the reasoning, inter-current forward chained reasoning was raised.In the mechanical transmission conceptual design, how to evaluate design is a difficult work. From study some models of evaluation, we prefer experience mathematics evaluation model.
