With the deepening of the smart grid strategy, the stability and reliability of op-eration of the power system are increasingly important. As the head of the security ofthe power system, the status and role of the relay protection are self-evident. With theexpansion of power system, the reliable operation of relay protection device is moreand more important. It affects directly the stable operation of power system if relayprotection device can correctly operate and quickly remove the fault. The researcheson the evaluation and analysis of relay protection device action assess the overallperformance of relay protection device under actual operating conditions. The initia-tive and objectivity during the process of evaluation and analysis are achieved.As an important branch in research and application fields of artificial intelli-gence, the theory of expert system well complies with the development trend of thesmart grid. Compared with the traditional process, the expert system can well reflectprocess of evaluation and analysis of relay protection device action. In this paper theprinciple of expert system is applied to realize the evaluation and analysis of relayprotection device action. Firstly, the knowledge base is designed to realize theprocessing and accumulation of large amounts of data after logical knowledge treat-ment through the acquisition and conclusion of knowledge data. Then the operationevaluation rules base can be constructed from the combination of the regulations is-sued by the relevant departments, and the double forward reasoning theory is used torealize the reasoning process which contains the operation causes analysis layer andthe responsible department analysis layer. After the optimization of the design of rea-soning machine, this design also achieves the tasks such as diagnosis, making deci-sion and evaluation. In this paper the object-oriented program design of Visual C++6and the database platform of SQL Server are adopted to realize the design of expertsystem. Finally, the operation evaluation report of relay protection device can beachieved after the operation evaluation function, which evaluates the action behaviorof protective devices objectively. It has a certain reference value for the relay protec-tion workers in the study on reliability of relay protection device.
