According to the in site monitoring project of the soft clay foundation of Lidun reservoir embankment and Reclamation Project of Xuanmen in Zhejiang Province, the method to predict long term ground settlement is studied by monitoring the soft clay foundation deformation and analyzing the consolidation of the foundation. The main factors influencing the ground settlement and the stability of embankment on soft clay ground are studied. Some valuable experience is gained for constructing relative high dam on deep soft clay. It can be summarized as follows.First, the in site monitoring data of the soft clay foundation of Lidun reservoir embankment and Reclamation Project of Xuanmen is analyzed in detail, including the ground surface settlement, pore water pressure, lateral displacement, deep settlement and so on. It can be used to control and optimize the construction process and load rate by analyzing the foundation deformation and consolidation.Secondly, the long-term ground surface settlements of 24 surface settlement plates are calculated by exponent curve, hyperbolic curve and Asaoka methods respectively. The consolidation degree of the deep soft clay foundation is back calculated according to the tested pore water pressure. An empirical formula to calculate the settlement computation factor is developed incorporating the tested in site settlement data of the standard sea walls in Taizhou City, in Zhejiang Province. Based on the settlement criterion of hyperbolic method under equal load rate and Terzaghi consolidation theory, the expression of settlement rate control criterion is presented.Thirdly, the main factors influencing settlement of embankments on soft clay ground are studied. The influence of structure of soft clay on its compressibility, consolidation parameter and other mechanical properties is discussed. How to calculate settlement considering structure and influence of construction on structure is presented. According to the tested data, the effective influence depth is determined and settlement calculation method and calculated compression depth criterion is improved. The measures to restrict the lateral deformation are given after analyzing the influence of lateral deformation on settlement.Finally, a practical method to calculate the limit height of the embankment on soft clay ground is developed based on the standard sea wall projects in Taizhou City in Zhejiang Province with the application of plastic flow theory. The anti-slide resistance calculation method and strength index and safety factor is studied in detail. With respect to the anti-slide resistance measures of embankment on soft clay ground, loading berm method and decrease the slope of the embankment are compared using plastic flow theory. Empirical calculation formula to control the stability criterion of the embankment on soft clay ground is presented incorporating standard sea wall projects in Taizhou City in Zhejiang Province.
