With the modernization of the city and the improvement of the living standard of the residents, the traffic congestion has become the bottleneck of the urban economic development. To solve this problem, it has been proved an effective way to construct box tunnel and to make good use of the underground space. However, no systematic and complete monographs about construction techniques are ever seen. Based on the materials domestic and abroad, this article has analyzed, studied and concluded the construction techniques of box tunnel, and introduced and summed up different construction techniques such as open digging, pipe roofing, pipe jacking, shield tunnel and sunk box. It has elaborated new techniques, new methods and new materials in the Municipal Engineering, particularly through some examples in Hangzhou, such as the underground project in Lishui Road, the Hubin tunnel project under the West Lake and the extending project of Jiefang Road. In China, the technique of box tunnel is usually applied in the developed cities along the coastal areas or the big rivers, which are mainly covered by soft soils. Therefore, this article has sorted out some engineering geographic problems of the construction on soft soil base and raised someunique opinions on the analysis and study of the characters of the soft soils caused by different reasons and the classification of methods dealing with the soft soils.The above-mentioned study should be helpful to the colleges engaged in the construction of urban infrastructure.
