The thesis focuses on the transformation (1950s-1970s) from classicalism to modernism in the architecture of Soviet union. This is also a discourse to examine its historic architectural phenomenon which had great effect on Chinese architecture. The thesis indicates the significance of transformation to Muscovite architecture and analyses the reason that China didn't follow the transformation as in the case of Soviet union.At first, the thesis starts with significance of the transformation to Muscovite and Chinese architecture in this period. It shows that it is necessary to study the transformation in architecture of Soviet union aiming at the deficiency in past study.Secondly, background, the thesis briefly reviews the development of architecture in Muscovite and searches the origin of the characteristics, for example, the Gothic tented roof, classic colonnade and Byzantinism. It also describes the backdrop of constructivism in 20 century and the transformation between 1930s to 1950s in Soviet union.Thirdly, analysis, the thesis analyses the course of transformation from classicalism to modernism in former Soviet union from the aspects of industrialization in architecture, mass construction of residence, and transformation of public building, in order to explain the reason, principle and significance of the transformation. Former Soviet union began to develop the modernistic architecture in virtue of this transformation. Consequently, there was flourish in architecture of Soviet union in 1980s. This is the core of the thesis.In the end, the thesis focuses on the Chinese architecture. In this period Chinese architecture was studying from former Soviet union across-the-board. It is a pity that we just learned the architecture before the transformation. In other words, Chinese architecture couldn't transform following Soviet union. I analysed the reason the arrived at the conclusion.
