This thesis presents the principle of a photovoltaic simulator which emulates the output characteristics of PV arrays. The algorithm, hardware and software of the simulator are devised and the researches are carried out in detail, including the experiments in principle. The hardware of the system is composed of main circuit based on Buck Chopper, the control circuit based on DSP TMS320LF2407 of Texas Instruments and measurement circuit. The power of the simulator can reach 300W. The algorithm divides the curve of the PV arrays into several lines, which simplifies the function characterizes the output performance of PV arrays. In regard to the software, it is programmed by assembly language to fulfill the algorithm and control the output of main circuit. The software and main circuit are the core of the whole system. Also, the main research focuses on this.Though the experiments the exactitude of the system is illustrated. The experimental results show that the output characteristics of the simulator are very close to those ofactual PV arrays, and the simulator has a good dynamic response as well. It can search the working point automatically and stabilize the output according to the change of the loads. Besides, the power of the simulator can be selected according to the desired power of the PV arrays which are simulated. Therefore, to some extent, the simulator can be used in replacement of actual PV arrays to provide a controllable environment for R&D of PV inverters and controllers, which avoids the PV experiments of the influence of the climate, irradiation and so on. Meantime, it provides an idea to simulate similar special power sources.
