In electricity markets power systems will operate more near its stability limit than before to obtain more profit, increasing the possibility of voltage instability incidents. This makes it necessary to incorporate voltage stability constraints in the conventional optimal power flow (OPF) formulation. This thesis first reviewed past research methods of voltage stability and chiefly discussed a voltage stability index--L index, then established an OPF formulation containing voltage stability constraints (VSCOPF), which can better satisfy the security and economical demand of power systems. Modern interior point optimization method is adopted here to deal with this problem. At last it discussed the load curtailment problem under the electricity market circumstances, establishing an OPF formulation whose objective function is load curtailment, also containing voltage stability constraints. Comparing to the optimal power flow in normal conditions, seeking the least load curtailment has more application value to power systems after contingency. The simulation results obtained from a series of IEEE standard test systems showed that the algorithm proposed is robust and in good convergence so that it will have a bright future in addressing power system optimization problems.
