The wind power is a kind of renewable green power resources. It is a permanent source with no exploring and transporting. To solve the problem of energy's shortage and improve the environment quality, a lot of countries use wind power to produce electricity. The power output of a wind power plant is stochastic, which is determined by the wind and wind turbine generators. If a wind plant has more wind turbine generators, the change of its power output will become smooth. With the development of wind industry, there will be more wind plants of 100 MW. This kind of large wind plants will bring many problems to the power system's operating. This paper has analyzed these problems and calculated the wind power penetration limit. The paper introduces an optimal method based on approximate linear programming for calculating the wind farm penetration. The major research and contributions are as follows:(1) With Power System Analysis Software Package, the paper analyses the stability of operation of the power system by dynamic simulation. The simulation results show that system voltage and frequency will keep varying with the change of the wind plant's power output. The larger the wind plant's capacity is, the more the system voltage and frequency change. The system frequency will exceed the limit much more than the system voltage.(2) The results on IEEE New England 39 system show that the wind farm penetration will change with the different system operation modes. It will also change with the different point which the wind plant connecting to the power grid. The less the electric distance between the wind plant and power plant is, the more the system frequency is infected.(3) If more system operation modes are taken into account, the calculation of wind farm penetration limit by dynamic simulation will be more complicated. This paper introduces an optimal method based on approximate linear programming for calculating the wind farm penetration. This method gets the object function and constraint function approximately linearized first. Then it uses the linear solution to find the accurate solution. The results on New England 39 system demonstrate that this method is rapid, precise and effective. Zheng Guo-qiang (School of Electrical Engineering)Directed by prof. Bao Hai...
