Firstly, a brief introduction is made to the design, preparation and properties' evaluation of Ceramic- Mental FGM (Function gradient Material). The effects of the Ceramic-Mental FGM applied in motorcycle engine is studied. Results of engine bench test show that the appliance of Ceramic-Mental FGM in motorcycle engine improves the power out and the fuel economy of the engine. So it is predicted that the Ceramic-Mental FGM can reduce friction, thus increase the power out and reduce the fuel consumption, which is proved by the experiments held in the Friction and Wear Laboratory of Tianjin University.Further 400-hour durability test of the motorcycle engine equipped with FGM is held to analyze the change of the power out, the torque and the fuel consumption. It is found that the reduction of the power out is obscure. The main friction area on the piston and cylinder is measured and compared, which proves that Ceramic-Mental FGM can decrease the friction and wear between the cylinder and piston.Another salt spray test was held on 5 types material samples divided into 2 groups. The test results show that the corrosion resistance of the materials after film coating are improved effectively, especially to cast aluminum. Because most cylinders and pistons of motorcycle engines are made of cast aluminum in present China, the appliance of Ceramic-Mental FGM will improve the corrosion resistance and the abradability of the cylinder and piston, which improves the general performance of motorcycle engines.
