Urban Waterfront was once not only the heart of city, but the habitation of transportation facilities, industry and ports. It played an very important role during the evolution of city. With the adjustment of industrial structure, it becomes one of the weakness of city. From 1960s, many waterfront cities have started the revitalization and redevelopment of their urban waterfront areas. Currently, several Chinese cities have also tried the revitalization. The purpose of this thesis is to give some advice to assist many Chinese cities in achieving the revitalization of their waterfront. This discussion reviews the development of planning, design and redevelopment of urban waterfront areas and analyses some waterfront revitalization cases throughout the world, especially in Toronto, Canada. Moreover, the author has some specific points of view on how to create integraded humanity sites and utilize the theory of landscape ecology, the strategy of sustainable development and tourism psychology. The planning, design and redevelopment of urban waterfront areas should be based on the framework of the whole city. Both the issues of urban scenery and the regional special characteristics are required to reflect the integrated and coordinated development of environment, economy and culture. Because of the bright future of the redevelopment of the urban waterfront areas and the limited study of this area in China, planners should put more emphases on landscape ecology theories and sustainable development strategies. Also, they should encourage citizens to treat ecological system in a natural way. Meanwhile, many flexible policies such as the organization of construction funds, the use and management of land and the idea of encouaging the public to participate in discussions should be implemented, all of which can build up a dialogue between humans and nature.
