This Thesis devises a new type of steel coupling beam with control device. The global objective is the assessment of the seismic usefulness of the innovative coupling beam, which could be accomplished by conducting dynamic finite element analysis on the spatial model.Conceptual analysis was firstly carried out on steel coupling beam with control device, with its model for dynamic analysis identified, and practical treatment of friction dissipator in dynamic analysis raised. Then modal analysis was conducted on the model to evaluate its influence on the natural vibration properties of global structure. Based on the modal result, analysis of stochastic seismic response was carried out, aiming to investigate the contribution of steel coupling beam with control device to structural seismic behavior in the frequency domain. With respect to the time domain, elastic time history analysis was performed to assess the efficiency of the innovative structure to reduce lateral seismic response of buildings under slight earthquake, so was elastic-plastic time history analysis to assess the efficiency under severe earthquake. Results show that the innovative steel coupling beam with control device demonstrates considerable seismic performance, which could reduce lateral seismic response of buildings while keep its natural vibration properties so as to make the structure serve in an ideal dissipation mode. Moreover, regarding elastically designed coupling beams of high-rise buildings, converting reinforced concrete sections to steel ones can reduce the structural stiffness, while the arrangement of steeling coupling beam with control device in middle floor couldMaster's Dissertationabate the reduction. In addition, method of stochastic seismic response analysis, which based on theory of stochastic in the aspect of frequency domain, is not accurate enough to evaluate the variance between influences of different short-span coupling beam cases on structural seismic performance. In the end, the thesis presents some design proposals for the engineering application of the innovative steel coupling beam, as well as recommendations for further studies.
