This paper focuses on the establishment of a dynamic monitoring system over the movement of locomotive pantographs. On locating abnormalities, the monitoring computer automatically activates alarming and proceeds with real-time manual analysis on the captured pictures. By doing so, a modern pantograph-catenary management can be realized to eliminate bad contacts.Completed on 15th, Aug. 1961, the Baoji~Fengzhou electric railway has maintained traffic for over 40 years by means of "wheel/track reaction" and "pantograph/catenary reaction". The current collection, carried out by locomotives through "pantograph/catenary reaction", undergoes comparatively complicated processes such as sliding, friction, heating, and other electric and chemical actions. The present conditions, where contract faults and overdue power down are frequently encountered, have caught much attention in the trend of a heavy load, high speed and informationized railway.Based on the principle of monitoring vehicles' movements by fixed devices, and by introducing power system measurement technology, establishing special measurement/maintenance system, and by deploying contact fault analysis, computer controlled image capturing, rapid picture shooting and image processing software, this dynamic monitoring system can be applied to the following aspects:1. Real-time monitoring of pantograph images vertically and horizontally;2. Establish intelligent model identification system via contact fault analysis;3. Retrace pantograph images to facilitate contact fault analysis;4. Periodical reading of pantograph pictures to analyze catenary status;5. Establish monitoring local area network with points-arrangement. This system proves to be practical for contact faults avoidance.
