The Xi-Pan Highway begins from eastern Huanglianguan in Xichang to western Panzhihua City with a span of 160.72km. It is strategically important because it connects Sichuan to Yunnan. Meanwhile Xi-Pan Highway is one of the most important parts of the road from Lanzhou City in Gansu Province to the Mohan Port in Yunnan Province, which in turn is one of the eight major western routeways made by the Ministry of Communications. Thus, it is vitally important to guarantee the propitious building and safe working of Xi-Pan Highway. The Xi-Pan Highway locates in the middle of structural belt in the South and North of Sichuan and Yunnan, where the Xigeda stratum in the late tertiary is the most typical feature. It is the centralized section of the most frequently happenings of geological hazards such as landslide, falling, debris flow etc. So, it is of great necessity and importance to make some in-depth and systematic investigations of the nature of works on rock and clay in Xigeda stratum; the excavated form, stability and the control techniques of the side slope and so on. This paper is focused on the stability of excavated slope in Xigedastratum of the Xi-Pan Highway. Based on the stable degree, four types are classified: stable, secondary stable, secondary unstable and unstable. In addition, their seventeen typical slopes are described deliberately. The distortion and the distribution of stress and strain about the above types are discussed through the finite element method (FEM) . And the relationship between distortion and stress on the stability of all kinds of typical slopes are also discussed theoretically. The centrifuge model test is made to get the value of distortion, stress-strain and the developmental tendency of the new excavated high slopes about the Xinjiu branch line in fourteen years. Based on the above research, the causes, about the destruction of all types of slopes are summarized, and the corresponding suggestions for control measurements are touched on as well.
