It's well known that the earthwork calculation in ditch design is tediousand important. The mean section method, which is the traditional earthworkcalculation and has too low preciseness, has been abandoned eventually. Weshould find a new method and design a general software to met practicalneeds of engineering. This paper systematically studied the essence, error source and error ofmean section method, on basis of which, a new method of earthworkcalculation was put forward. The theoretical basis of the method is the pointcoordinate method and the dual basic spline method. First, we figure out thefill or cut section area in every stake by the point coordinate method. Second,we work out area in every point by the dual basic spline, and then calculatethe earthwork. Like the mean section method, this method has simplymodules of calculation, and is suit to deal with linear engineering of ditch androad. Also, it makes up for the fatal defection of less preciseness of meansection method, and has strong adaptability to complex terrain, especially, tocalculate the conditions of varying section or twisty plane, it has a good effecttoo. So it has better practical value. This paper tentatively developed the higher preciseness software ofearthwork calculation. Through sufficiently using the design of frame, mouldand visual program which was worked out with Visual Basic 6.0, wedeveloped the following modules: the module of section database formation;the module of fill and cut section area calculation and the module ofearthwork calculation. These modules possess the advantages of convenienceuse, high efficiency and good function, and can well solve the practicalproblems of production.
