Environmental Evaluation And Square Design

Architects and urban planners are well aware of the long tradition of critically assessing buildings and other built environments. In recent years these assessments have taken the form of post-occupancy evaluations reflecting various perspectives (users,energy performance), methodologies (ovservations, questionaires), and theoretical formulation. They have also focused a wide range of environmental settings ranging in scope from office environments and housing developments to national parks.In the first part of this thesis, it defines the concept of environmental evaluation, reviews the creation and development of environmental evaluation and the research present situation in China. It also accounts for that the environmental evaluation triers should study not only the research conclusion as the guide and basis of design and decision making, but also the evaluation pattern and method used in research. In this way, triers will use the method better to solve the evaluation problems in different environment type.In the second part, the aim of the thesis is to provide a general, multivariate model of the experience of places which is offered as a theoretical basis for place evaluationAt the basis of the review of the evaluation theory in the field of environmental psychology and the literature synthesis, a theoretical model for environmental evaluation is built and this model suggests a structure to the evalution of places that may be generalizable most settings. The structure derives from the definition of place evalution as the degree to which a person sees a place helping to achieve that person's goals at various level of interaction with that place.In the third part of this thesis, it discusses on a concrete place evaluation, square environmental evaluation. At the basis of the built theoretical model, according to the character and design factor of square environment, it dissertates the distal cues, the proximal cues and the setting judged of square environment evaluation and builts the model for the evaluation of square environment.In order to test empirically this framework, at the lastcharpter the thesis presents apractice of the model--the evalution of Shanghai Jingan and Huaihai squareenvironments,which was done by means of questionnaire, observation and interview.According to the data statistics and analysis, the advantage and disadvantage of the square were explained and the adjusting suggests were made. The result showed a greater percentage of the satisfaction in the square with the spacious of the ambience, amenities and management of square.
