Hot spot stress is an important factor in the fatigue strength analysis of ship structure via S-N curve method.Hot spot stress can be obtained by Finite Element Method (FEM), but some factors may influence the preciseness of the calculated result of hot spot stress via FEM, such as the finite element style, the mesh size near the welded toe, FEA (finite element analysis) program and how to simplify the structure. So, it has been an important research direction in the world to study how to simplify the structure exactly, chose a suitable finite element style and mesh size to get a precise hot spot stress value. In this article, three means are occupied to simplify the investigated structure, and every simplified model is meshed with different element style and mesh size by two FEA programs, then 11 finite element models are generated and analyzed. After comparing the FEA and experimental results of hot spot stress, one of these finite element models is attested to be the best model to evaluate the hot spot stress in welded toe.
