Irrigation and drainage by means of electromechanical power have developed rapidly since the foundation of the People's Republic of China. So far, about 500,000 pumping stations have been built, among which are over 300 large pumping stations. With the development of the national economy and the start of the south-to-north water transferring project, more and more large pumping stations will be built. In order to ensure pumping stations running safely and efficiently and to obtain maximum economic and social benefits, it is necessary to select pumping set properly, and to realize optimal design of inlet and outlet conduits.The design of inlet and outlet conduits will have a great influence upon the working characteristic of pumping sets. If the dimensions of conduits selected are unreasonable, vortex will appear, hydraulic losses will be increased and the efficiency of pumping set will be reduced consequently. Moreover, the shape and dimensions of inlet and outlet conduits will directly influence the investment and construction of pumping stations. It is also true as far as the selection of pump type and the number of pumping sets is concerned. So it is of great importance to study optimal design of pumping system.On the basis of the latest scientific achievements of conduit design and pumping system optimization, a software that can be easily used by engineering and technical personnel for optimal design of pumping system is developed. With the help of advanced programming language Visual Basic and secondary exploitation tools of AutoCAD, optimum design of inlet and outlet conduit is realized. A method for predicting dynamic characteristics of pumping system by means of VB and Matlab is also proposed. And methods to determine the optimal rotation speed of pumping sets are studied as well in the article for the purpose to obtain highest pumping set efficiency corresponding to the pumping station head.The methods proposed in the article and the software developed can be used in the optimal design of inlet and outlet conduits, the selection of pump sets, and in reconstruction projects of pumping stations.
