With the more and more stringent regulations related to internal combustion engines, it is becoming increasingly important to reduce the vibration and noises of engines used in various kinds of vehicles. Torsional vibration characteristics and mechanical strength of the crankshaft, which is one of the important components in an IC engine, have highly significant influences on the reliability, economic performance, power output and the total noises of an engine.A discrete equivalence system model of the crankshaft of a 4102BZQ diesel engine manufactured by Dongfeng Chaoyang Diesel Engine Co. Ltd. was established, and corresponding simulation computations on the natural frequencies and modes of torsional vibrations of the crankshaft system were carried out based on the constructed model.Torsional vibration experiments were accomplished under 19 operating conditions of diesel engine for the purpose of investigating the torsional vibration situations of the crankshaft system of a 4102BZQ diesel engine. The measured results were analyzed and an conclusion was achieved in combination with the computed results of natural characteristics. In order to study the deformation and strength of the engine crankshaft of interest, fundamental theories of vibration mode analysis and finite element analysis of the crankshaft system were described , and then bend and torsion analyses of the same crankshaft structure of a 4102BZQ diesel engine are conducted under the conditions of four different load modes, namely, two kinds of pressed states at explosive pressures of 10.5MP or 14.3MPa, maximum torque output at 1600 r/min and the pulled state of rated speed of 2800r/min.
