With the emission control regulations being increasingly stricter, the present technology of internal combustion engine (ICE) faces more challenges than ever before. Applying HCCI to GDI engine is expected to be most promising to bring breakthrough among the technological routines to further improve ICE's emission characteristics. An electronic control system (ECS) for the '973' project ——'Research of Gasoline HCCI Engine and Diesel HCCI Engine' is developed in this project, so that further experimental research on HCCI mode and GDI mode can be done with this ECS.The hardware of the electronic control system, which is based on Motorola's MC68HC912D128A, includes the wiring-harness interface circuit, the sensor input-signal control circuit, the injection circuit, the ignition circuit, the power-supervision circuit, the on-line debugging circuit and the SCI communication circuit. Part of the hardware has already achieved the robustness standard equivalent for commercial mass production. The embedded software for the slave (microcontroller) consists of the injection control and the ignition control. The software is implemented in a foreground/background structure, including the initial module, the synchronization module, the ignition module, the injection module and the SCI communication module. The software's major task is to implement GDI and two-phase injection. Thanks to the structure's similarity to those ECS in mass production vehicles, this software has a good extensibility for the future commercial application. The supervision software for the master (PC) is implemented by Visual Basic. The interface of the supervision software, not only supervises engine running-condition and control information, but also switches the engine between GDI mode and HCCI mode. The software's user-friendly human-machine interface provides an easy real-time means to adjust the control parameters, such as the parameters to control the two-phase injection and the ignition. At last, the electronic control system has gone through the validation, which includes the oscillograph debugging and the trial engine experiment. Experiment data show that this electronic control system has fulfilled all of the expectations. This trial-engine-based ECS is also suitable for the debugging procedure for other kinds of ICE combustion modes.
