With development of the national economy, China's steel production has gained the first place in the world. At the same time,steel structures have widely applied in the Civil Engineering. Due to the poor performance of steel under elevated temperature, analysis for high temperature behaviors of steel structures serves an important role in steel structure design. At present, many achievements have been obtained in the research of high temperature effect on steel structure performance. But it is difficult to apply them to actual engineering, and to date there is few software for light-weight steel space beam-column structures under elevated temperature with a good connection to Chinese codes and research results for structural design in our country. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a CAD system for behavior analysis of steel space beam-column structures exposed to elevated temperature, which meets the requirements of practitioners.As part of the entire work, the software is developed based on the popular flat Visual C++6.0 by using object-oriented method. The software system makes full use of the advanced computer technology including C/C++ Windows Programming,Microsoft Foundation Classes,operating visibility and graph-image programming.This system consists of three parts: preprocess,structural behavior calculation and post-processing. The data used by calculation program and post-processing are formed by dialogs and operations to the image. A program is compiled, which can analyze the nonlinear response of lightweight steel space beam-column structure under elevated temperature. And the corresponding further research results can be easily added to the program. Finally, a visualization program is also developed, which can display the results of calculation. Compiling the procedure for analyzing the nonlinear response of lightweight steel space beam-column structure under elevated temperature is also an important part of work. The material and geometrical non-linearity as well as the non-uniform temperature distribution along across frame member section are taken into account. Thermal forces induced by temperature variation are applied to the structure exposed to fire. Such structures subjected to fire convert to the structures subjected to thermal forces. The procedure can predict the nonlinear response and ultimate loading capacity of steel space beam-column structure exposed to fire.It's a complicated and arduous work to develop a large CAD system for structural behavior analysis, especially for such a structure exposed to elevated temperature. Profound knowledge is required in the aspect of structure, computer, mathematics, physics and so on. The author work intending establishing the whole CAD system frame, accomplishing partial preprocesses and post-process and starting with the research of the performance of lightweight steel space beam-column structures under elevated temperature. The work gives a base to the following research and development.
