With the development of modern architecture industry, diamond blades are more andmore widely used. Because of the extreme small size of the diamond particles in the blades,they must be conglutinated together to exert its cutting ability. So the methods of increasingbonding strength between diamond particles and binding materials are paid more and moreattention. Among these methods, coating certain kind of metal films on the surface of thediamond particles is the most promising one. In this paper, a new technique preparing Ti or Ni thin films on diamond particlesurfaces by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is introduced. Firstly, some techniques adopted toprepare metal films on diamonds are summarized. After analyzing the shortages of thesetechniques, PLD is put forward as an advanced method to offset the limitations of thetraditional techniques. The basic principle of PLD is presented in detail, which covers thefollowing aspects: the process of production of plasma which is induced by high powerlaser beam; the process of metal atoms cohering on the surface of diamond particles; theprocess of consecutive films growing on the diamonds. Two parts of experimental research work are done in the experiments, one ispreparation of metal films on diamonds; the other is production of diamond bladecomprising coated metallic films. Compressive strength of uncoated and coated diamondsis measured, the surface morphologies are also observed by metallography microscope.Specific ingredients of the coated metal films are examined by XRD. Diamond blade'sthree-point bending strength is measured and the morphology of the blade's breakingsurface is observed. Experimental results show bonding strength between binding materials and diamondparticles is obviously improved. Pulsed Laser Deposition is a very effective technique toprepare metallic films on diamond particles.
