Strengthening economy and system reliability were neglected in traditional strengthening methodology which strengthening at dangerous path, damaged part or weak cell, when structural buildings need to be repaired due to errors in design or use, low quality of construction or materials, or the changing of its use. This work gives emphasis on research on reliability-oriented optimal design in structural reinforcement and strengthening.Reliability–oriented optimization of structural reinforcement and strengthening in system level can lead to economy and consistent, uniform structural safety. The work explains structural system reliability method, particular explains response surface method, Rackwitz-Fiessler algorithm, Monte Carlo simulation and Latin hypercube sampling. The work sets up a general model of reliability-oriented optimal design in structural reinforcement and strengthening and presents an approach to reliability constrains in optimization by an adaptive inverse reliability iterative method. Two examples are shown: 1) optimization is done on a steel beam bearing bending moment, given its performance function, 2) a rigid frame bearing thrust, with concealed limit state function. Response surface method and Rackwitz-Fiessler algorithm are brought together to reach the limit state function of the frame, then reliability constrains in optimization are settled through the adaptive inverse reliability iterative method. The examples show that the adaptive inverse reliability iterative method is feasible in solving reliability constrains in reliability-oriented optimal design in structural reinforcement and strengthening. In the end, the work summarizes that it is necessary to do more research in sensitivity analysis of design variables and expected failure cost in objective function, it also points out some issues in development and appliance of reliability theory.
