The ancient Chinese villages are incomparable in their great number, vast coverage, various types, unique characteristics, and high historical and cultural value. The current research on ancient villages is mainly case studies. The research scope is comparatively small. The research content lays particular emphasis on the phenomenology and history, while the general basic theories are inadequately explored. The protection of ancient villages is still not considered on an overall basis, and is merely limited to the protection of its entity, regardless of the fact of village being multi-composite unity, the importance of human and cultural factors. The methods of protection get into the misleading "static" protection, ignoring the "dynamic" development. This resulted in a lot of inappropriate decision making, which led to some permanent damage to the ancient villages. The aims of the study are: to provide some effective practical and theoretical methods of protecting and exploring the ancient villages which possess historical and cultural value; to offer some ways to improve the living environments of the villagers, to enhance its charm as a tourist site and promote the development of its economy; to accomplish the designing of the protection and tourism development of Yujiacun. This thesis focuses on the value analysis of the ancient Chinese villages and their on going protection and tourism development. It analyzes the environmental formation of the Chinese ancient village, as well as the formation of its value system, and suggests some corresponding methods and measures to protect them. Based on the feasible analysis, it is proposed that developing tourism is an effective way to the protection and development of the ancient villages. By combining practice and theory, the design of protecting Yujiacun and developing its tourism is fulfilled. This research has the following distinctive features: Firstly, studying the ancient village as a whole dynamic organism which includes natural, social, economical factors makes the research content more systematic and consummate. Secondly, in this study, data analysis is upgraded to theoretical research. The theory of ongoing overall protection is put forward. It is tempted to find common and effective solutions to the problems faced by most ancient villages, expanding case studies to the general studies. Finally, theory is combined with practice. Based on the vast investigation and mapping, as well as applying the theory of protection and exploration, the design for protecting Yujiacun and developing its tourism is fulfilled. Therefore, the study is significant in practice. The study of ancient villages is still an area in which much is unexplored. Both its whole and details need more complete and thorough research. For example, the evaluating system of the ancient villages, the evaluating system of their protection and exploration, their protection and legislation, the system and mode of their management can become independent research targets. In the future, further research on ancient villages will be carried out when time and chance are due.
