Abutment stability problem is very important in the design and study of arch dam. The paper, based on ANSYS, a large FEM software for structure analysis, studies three methods of calculating abutment safety factor against sliding, and analyzes the effects of contact properties on stability against sliding by studying the slip surface in a vertical slope. The main contents of the paper are as follows:First, the basic theory and method of elasto-plasticity and contact nonlinear in FEM simulation analysis in rock engineering and hydrostructure engineering are studied, and the corresponding application techniques in ANSYS are discussed. Then, it is analyzed how to choose suitable element models and material types for dam concrete and abutment rock, how to set up simulation model for abutment stability analysis, and especially how to simulate slip surface in abutment with ANSYS contact model.Meanwhile, the two main methods of calculating abutment safety factor against sliding, overload method and safety reduction method, are studied, and an adjuvant method, method of safety factor in point, is discussed, too. These three methods are validated to be accurate and effective by applying them to the problem of a vertical slope that has theoretic results. At the same time, based on the problem mentioned above, it is studied that how the material characteristics of slip surface influence slope stability against sliding by comparing different slippage distribution on slip surface under different friction coefficient, different cohesion and different contact stiffness. Finally, the Goupitan arch dam is analyzed by 3-D nonlinear FEM simulation method. And the dam's degree of safety against sliding is evaluated by the three methods mentioned above.
