Together the development of the computer technology and the measuring technology ,the reverse engineering of the realization production by the CAD/CAM technology and the advanced manufacture technology become one of the hotspot in CAD/CAM area and is the primary content of the application of the reverse engineering technology. Firstly measuring and post processing which are two main content of the reverse engineering are discussed in this paper. In order to do reverse engineering, the measuring way is the chief task of the reverse engineering, and it is the first step to get point data of the scanned part. Post processing is the most important and multifarious in the reverse engineering, including point data processing, surface constructing, border trimming and so on. The forming properties of the reverse engineering are then discussed. The automotive panel is mostly made up of complex surface in the three dimensions. Highly demanded in quality, transfiguration is complex in punching process, and the rule of the forming can not be easily held. The cause of quality is complex. The material parameter of the craftwork design and the die design is given out. Finally by the main type software Pro/E the application of reverse engineering which is used in the forming of the automotive panel is discussed, which include reconstructing of the surface model of the automotive panel, making of the die of the automotive panel and numerical control machining of the automotive panel die. The reverse engineering is considered one means of manufacture. It can measure the part of the automotive panel and reconstruct its model. Furthermore it create NC code. In this way it will greatly improve the manufacturing efficiency of the automotive panel die, reduce times of repairing die, reduce cost of the die manufacture.
